Crew Organization

Pride of Baltimore II sails with a contingent of twelve professional crew members. This complement includes a Captain, two Mates, a Bosun, an Engineer, a Cook, and six deckhands. All crew members have extensive sailing experience; most have crewed aboard other traditional sailing ships. Pride, Inc., the non-profit organization that manages the vessel, employs two full time, professional captains who alternate sailing responsibilities at two month intervals. All other crew sign on for six month tours of duty. Some sign on for an additional six months, and others return after a period ashore. In addition to the twelve professional crew members, Pride II can accommodate six passengers, or "guest crew members," who are integrated into the daily operation of the ship according to their interests and abilities.

All crew have two basic responsibilities - to sail the ship in a safe and seaman-like manner, and to serve as goodwill ambassadors for Baltimore and Maryland during dockside and sailing receptions.

While underway, the crew is divided into three watches. Each watch stands duty for four hours and is off for eight hours. The three watches are led by the First mate, the Second mate, and the Bosun. While in port, the crew is divided into two watches, Port and Starboard, led by the First and Second Mates respectively. While in port, the two watches generally alternate full days on and off duty.
