On August 16, I stepped aboard Pride of Baltimore II in the city of Cleveland on Lake Erie. The ship was berthed inside the breakwaters beside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Due to the efforts of the crew, the ship's overall appearance was visibly improved from when I left her in Boston. Not that she ever looked bad at any point, but a lot of time was spent in the spring tying up the loose ends of the winter re-rig project. This was time taken away from cosmetics which are a normal part of spring projects.
The visit to Chicago in mid-July represented the farthest Pride II would get from home this year. Since that point, she has been working her way back home. We have two stops remaining in the Great Lakes this year - Erie and Toronto. While this season is far from over, it is with some measure of surprise that I find myself suddenly looking at the downward slope of the 1999 season.
A number of the crew were able to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, each returning with a different impression. Unlike other museums where most of us assume the superior knowledge of the curators, the patrons of rock and roll are all experts in their own right in varying degrees. Each comes seeking some special memory or association. But at the heart of it all is youth and the music. At $15 a head, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was not a bargain, but it contained some fascinating things. The hand written remarks of John Lennon's disgusted teachers on his report card gave no insight into the creative genius that lay ahead. And by the way, Elvis is in the building.
