Ports of Call in the Great Lakes

So here we are in the Great Lakes. Here's some pictures of places that Pride of Baltimore II called on this summer. See if you can match up the places with their pictures. There's lots of clues in the pictures even if you don't recognize the place right away.

  1. ____ 1000 Islands, Lake Ontario
  2. ____ Detroit, Michigan
  3. ____ Mackinac Island, Michigan
  4. ____ Straits of Mackinac Bridge, Michigan
  5. ____ Chicago, Illinois
  6. ____ Racine, Wisconsin
  7. ____ Milwaukee, Wisconsin

1 = E: 1000 Islands, Lake Ontario

The very first place, Pride II visited in the Great Lakes was an area called the 1000 Islands in Lake Ontario. It's a beautiful set of islands with old mansions set right on the water's edge. Before air conditioning, they were great summer homes for wealthy people from New York City.

2 = B: Detroit, Michigan

Detroit is a cpp; place, too. It has lots of skyscrapers. It's set on the Detroit River between Lake Erie and Lake Huron. You can tell that Detroit is the "motor city" because there are huge factories along the river where cars are made.

3 = F: Mackinac Island, Michigan

Did you guess that picture F was Mackinac Island? It's way up at the top of Michigan. To get there you have to take a ferry from Mackinaw City. It's a special vacation place where no cars are allowed. To get around, you take a horse or a bike!

4 = G: Straits of Mackinac Bridge, Michigan

Guessing the Straits of Mackinac Bridge was easy since it was the only bridge, right? This bridge connects Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. Before the bridge was opened in 1957, you had to take a ferry - like in Maryland before the Bay Bridge was opened. Until a few years ago, the Mackinac Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. (Now the longest one is in Osaka, Japan.)

5 = A: Chicago, Illinois

Chicago was the highlight of the Great Lakes Tour. Pride II stayed at Navy Pier for week and was busy practically every minute! There is an amusement park on Navy Pier with a giant Ferris wheel. The crew got three days off in Chicago so they could go out and see the sights. Like some of the 500 decorated cows that are all over downtown!

6 = D: Racine, Wisconsin

Racine, Wisconsin, was just a quick stop to visit some customers of the Port of Baltimore. Pride II docked on a river inside a drawbridge. She was practically in the middle of downtown!

7 = C: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Pride II was a special guest in Milwaukee. She went there to help the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Association celebrate the naming of their new, replica lake schooner. Their ship is being built on the Milwaukee waterfront - just like Pride II was built in Baltimore's Inner Harbor in 1988. The new (old) ship will be called the Denis Sullivan. It's named after a famous Great Lakes ship captain from the turn of the century.

Mission

Those were some of the ports of call that Pride II visited this summer while you were on vacation. But, you may ask, what did she do there?

She did many of things. First of all, she made lots of friends for you and the State of Maryland by having Open Houses wherever she stopped. People love to come aboard and see what an authentic (real) 19th century sailing ship is like.

She encouraged business by going to places where Maryland companies have customers. For instance, the stop at Racine, WI, was to entertain business people at the Case Tractor Company. They make thousands of tractors and ship them to Europe out of the port of Baltimore.

In Milwaukee she supported the idea of preserving tall ships and maritime heritage. She took volunteers from the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Association out sailing - to give them a taste of what it will be like when their own schooner is finally in the water.

Homeward Bound

All in all, it was a very busy summer for your Goodwill Ambassador. But now she's on her way home to Chesapeake Bay. I'll climb aboard in Mystic, Connecticut, and sail to Philadelphia. I'll tell you all about it in my next log. After that, your Blue Ribbon teachers will take over and tell you about their adventures aboard Pride II in the Bay and around the state.

Maybe we'll see some of you aboard on School Tours!

Till then, keep your socks up and your powder dry!

Your virtual shipmate,
Jerome Bird

YOUR THOUGHTS

  1. Baltimore, Wilmington, and Norfolk all have their own replica tall ships. Milwaukee and Chestertown, MD, are building replica ships as well. Why do you suppose so many cities want to have tall ships?
  2. If you were going to build something to remind everybody of the heritage of your community, what would it be?
  3. If you were planning a trip to the Great Lakes, where would you like to visit?
  4. Imagine that you are Pride II's Advance Person for Annapolis, MD. What would your job be?
  5. Write a paragraph about your adventure aboard Pride II in going through the Welland Canal around Niagara Falls.
