Help Wanted Ads
At the turn of the 20th century, city newspapers ran urgent advertisements
looking for women and girls to work in canneries. Many of the
canneries were out in the country in rural areas where the fruit and vegetables were
grown. The women and girls would often spend the whole summer away
from home working in the canneries. They lived in tents or simple
cottages, like migrant workers do today. They would prepare fruits
and vegetables for canning. This was considered women's work since
people believed women and girls had delicate hands which were good for
slicing foods. Men and boys did heavier labor. These advertisements
are from newspapers the early 1900's.
