Why did All these Roads Lead to Baltimore?Streets of Baltimore Farmers and their families often packed their wagons full of jars filled with items they produced on their farms. They brought products like spicy apple butter, honey, and sweet yellow butter to the city. The jars were wrapped in thick, coarse linen that had been woven by the farmer's wife and children from flax. All these things were sold or traded in Baltimore for items such as salt, sewing and knitting needles, scissors, or knives. Farmers also sold their loads of corn, wheat, tobacco, hemp or flax seed to shipping merchants who kept in touch with merchants in ports near and far.
