The Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party occurred in 1773 as a protest against the British tax on tea. Citizens dressed as Indians dumped many casks of tea into Boston harbor so it could not be sold or taxed. The colonists complained, "No taxation without representation." Look at this Boston Tea Party web site to gather more information. Then answer Questions #3 and #4 on your Tea Party Worksheet.

Here is another primary source from the time. It is a letter written by Robert Sessions, a young man living in Boston at the time, who participated in the Boston Tea Party. A primary source is an original letter, news article, or picture describing an event in history. We are lucky when we have these original sources to investigate. Click on Robert Sessions' letter to learn about the event from someone who was there.
