What is a wetland?

A wetland is just what its name says that it is: an area of land that is wet. Wetlands are sometimes called by other names, such as swamp, bog, marsh, or fen. Often, wetlands are areas between dry land and deeper water.

Sometimes wetlands are not obviously wet places. They may be located in forested areas or fields, and only hold water during certain times of the year. In fact, you may even find wetland areas on your schoolyard or in your neighborhood!
