When was St. Mary's City Settled?

How many years do you think the Native Americans lived in this area before the English settled St. Mary's City? You probably think it was a long time, and you'd be right.

Most people think that the English settlers from the Calvert family landed right at St. Mary's City, and that's where they decided to build the city. But that's not quite right. The Calvert settlers actually landed first at a place called St. Clement's Island. This is an aerial photograph (or a picture taken from the air) of St. Clement's Island.

It is hard to visit St. Clement's Island today, since you can get there only by boat.

So how many years ago did the Calvert settlers land on St. Clement's Island? To help you answer Question #1 on your worksheet, think about what year it is today. Now, think about what year it was that the Calvert settlers landed on St. Clement's Island. If you're not sure what year that was, you can use the timeline at the Maryland State Archives.

While you are using this web site, you should have your worksheet ready so that you can take notes and answer Question #1 on your Maryland's First Capital Worksheet. Your teacher will give you a copy of this Worksheet.

Do you think you're ready to do all of those mathematical calculations? Go ahead and try!
