The City VanishesWhat is St. Mary's City like today? This is a picture of some archaeologists working on the grounds of St. Mary's City to learn as much as they can about it. In the background of the photograph, you can see a frame structure of a building. The historians and archaeologists think that there was a building there.
Today, there is very little left of the original buildings from St. Mary's City of 1634. In fact, for many years the St. Mary's City of 1634 only existed in history books and in stories. There is a college there today, but there is very little that you can still see of what used to be the capital of Maryland. A museum called Historic St. Mary's City now stands on the site of the old capital.
