Maryland's First Capital:
Discovering a Lost City

What if you were one of the first settlers to sail across the Atlantic to found the colony of Maryland? What do you think it would have been like to live here over three hundred years ago?

This Maryland Exploration will tell you the story of Maryland's first English settlement and capital city, St. Mary's City. You will learn about what it was like for the first settlers who sailed from England to meet the Native Americans who lived by Chesapeake Bay. You will see how we can learn things about the past from objects that we find buried in the ground.
