Elements for a Good Map

D =

Date - When the map was made and what dates are represented on it.

O =

Orientation - A compass rose indicates direction to the viewer.

G =

Grid - Some maps need latitude and longitude to be useful.

S =

Scale - Indicates relative distances represented on the map.

T =

Title - A title tells what the map is about.

A =

Author - This tells who made the map.

I =

Index - Indicates the part of the grid where specific information can be located. Not all maps need this element.

L =

Legend - Another word for a key to explain colors or symbols.

S =

Source of the information that is shown on the map (Such as a census).
