    Activity 2

Here is a chart comparing the differences in the American and British navies:

    Vessel Type

    # of Guns

    U.S. Navy

    British Navy

    Ship of the Line

    64-120

    0

    124

    Frigate

    26-50

    8

    116

    Smaller Vessels

    < 24

    8

    > 360

Here is a chart showing the average number of guns each vessel type carried.

    Vessel Type

    # of Guns

    Average # of Guns

    Ship of the Line

    64-120

    92

    Frigate

    26-50

    38

    Smaller Ships

    1-24

    12

    Thoughtful Application

You are a newspaper reporter for the New York Evening Post in 1814. It is the morning of September 14, and the British have just given up their attack on Fort McHenry. You are assigned to write the front page story summarizing not only the battle, but Baltimore's role in the war. Your audience is not from Baltimore, and is not familiar with Baltimore Clippers. Your job is to inform them of the importance of the Baltimore Clipper on the outcome of this war. Support your thoughts with facts based on the game you just played, and what you have learned through this lesson. Don't forget to write a headline for your article!
