Ahoy there Shipmates!

I'm Lee Vogtman and I'll be your "Looking Glass into Europe" this fall when I sail as the Teacher Aboard the tall ship, Pride of Baltimore II. I teach at Brunswick High School in Frederick County. From September through November, you and I will travel just like T Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn exploring new places, new people, and new customs.

We will be ambassadors to eight different countries, making new friends at schools in each new land. After we work our way through Europe, we'll cross the ocean to Puerto Rico and then head home to Baltimore.

What? You've never been to Europe?! Well, get your maps out and hang onto your hats because we have a whale of an adventure ahead of us! Do you think we'll find many differences between the countries? I sure hope so because if you think about it, that's what makes life so interesting and so much fun! Do any of you have family members in Europe? How many of you can trace your heritage (family history) back to Europe?

I'll be taking lots of pictures to share with you as we learn about our brothers and sisters across the sea, so join me in September as we begin our trek (long journey) through the continent of Europe.

I'm excited about the adventure!

Your Teacher Aboard

YOUR THOUGHTS

  1. Make a map to plot our voyage as we travel from country to country. Now look at a map of the United States. Are the distances between states usually smaller or larger than between the countries in Europe?

  2. Make a list of the differences you might expect to find between the countries we visit and your own home state. Now make a list of the similarities you expect to find!

  3. Ask your parents if they have a family tree that traces your ancestors back to Europe. How far back can you trace your roots?

You can email questions or comments to the Teacher Aboard! Write you thoughts to this email box: Europe@pride2.org. Write now with questions you would like Mr. Vogtman to be on be on the look out for! He may answer you directly, or post an answer on the Europe with Pride Bulletin Board.
