 Challenge 3:
Nuclear Energy in the European Union

As the countries of Europe talk to each other about unification, they have tried to decide on some common solutions to problems such as health care, energy, cultural diversity and caring for the environment. How do the nuclear energy policies of countries being visited by Pride compare to one another and to the policies of the European Union?

The Euratom Treaty states that nuclear energy should always be an option for Member States. Some Member States are dependent on nuclear power, others are trying to reduce their dependency, and a few are trying to stop using nuclear energy all together. As the European community moves toward unification, Member States will need to move toward similar energy policies.

To learn more about nuclear energy and the European Union, read the Commission Document on the Nuclear Industries in the European Union. You may also wish to visit the sites listed in the challenge on European Unification.
