My House - Your House
IntroductionPride II began her voyage to Asia on December 6, 1997 and will visit ports in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan before returning to the United States. Go to a world map and retrace her trip so far.Look ahead and locate the ports in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. What do you think it would be like to live in one of those cities or surrounding communities? Do you think that your home there would be similar to the one you now live in, or would it be very different? Do you think that the building materials used in construction would be the same as materials that are used in this country? Why or why not? Do you think that the geographic setting of these homes would affect the way the people build their houses? Would it affect the way they live their lives? The design and construction styles of our buildings and homes is called architecture. Architectural styles come and go, just like clothing styles and fads. Certain styles of architecture may be most common in particular countries, or during specific time periods. The next time that you are riding somewhere in a car or bus take a look at the houses and buildings that you pass. Look for "styles" and try to figure out what building materials (like brick, stone, wood, glass, vinyl, aluminum, and steel) were used. We are going to take a "field trip," through our computers, so that you can see what it might be like to live in parts of Asia. Remember, people there live in urban (city), suburban (smaller communities), and rural (country) areas just like we do. Some may live in very modern structures, and some may live in very old buildings or homes. On our "field trip", we will only be able to see a few of the many possible places to live in some of the countries that Pride II will be visiting. Before we begin our "trip" let's take just a few minutes to reflect on where you live. To continue with this lesson click the "Ahead" button below. |
