This part of the lesson is optional because it involves conducting a scientific experiment to create your very own algae "bloom." It could be done in your classroom or at home. If you are going to try this part of the lesson, you will need to print out the instructions below for growing algae. This experiment will let you see first-hand what happens when too many nutrients are present in water. Similar results could happen in the Chesapeake Bay, or in the ocean. Check with your teacher to see if you could conduct this experiment at home or in a corner of the classroom. Maybe your teacher will let your class try it together.
