Part 1 - The Tiny World of Plankton

Now would be a good time to learn more about the tiny world of plankton. As you explore the World Wide Web sites listed below, you will need a copy of the Tiny World of Plankton worksheet that your teacher will give you.

To learn more about plankton you will go to two World Wide Web sites listed below. At the first site read the information about plankton. At the second site take a look at some zooplankton (you don't have to read the information with the pictures unless you want to!). Don't forget, to return to the lesson, you will need to click on the "Back" button on your browser to get back to Pride II's Web site.

You will be recording the information that you gather in a graphic organizer. Take a look at the Web sites listed below before you design your graphic organizer. Then, when you're ready, design a graphic organizer for recording information that you will be gathering about phytoplankton and zooplankton. You should be gathering information that helps explains what you learn about phytoplankton and zooplankton. How large do they get? Where do they live? What do they need to live? How are they able to survive in the ocean?

The graphic organizer that you use to record your information can take on any shape! Be creative! Use the organizer that you created to record key information that you learn about both kinds of plankton. This means that the graphic organizer should have two main areas, one for Phytoplankton and one for Zooplankton. If you need to make additions or changes to your organizer as you move along the lesson, go right ahead. Once you have finished recording information feel free to use colored pencils or markers to make your organizer even more eye-catching. You may choose to work with a partner to do this part of the lesson, or you may work alone - ask your teacher if you are unsure of how you want to proceed. Be sure to answer the questions for both phytoplankton and zooplankton.
