Step Two For the United States as a whole, the types of products imported and exported are different from those of Maryland. Now view a table of the top twelve exported and imported products for the United States in 1996. Compare this list with the one you made for Maryland. Do you see any similarity between Maryland and the United States as a whole? Are there any items on both lists? Why do you think the lists are different? ![]() Trade between countries is not something new. In 1816 the ship Chasseur sailed from Baltimore to Canton, China, to trade with the Chinese. What do you think Chasseur took to China? What do you think it brought back? On the worksheet provided by your teacher there are two columns. Under the title "Exports," list 5 products you think Chasseur might have taken to China in 1816. Then list 5 products that a cargo ship might take to China today. After you have completed the "Import" column, list 5 products Chasseur might have brought from China to the United States in 1816 and 5 products a ship might import to the US from China today. Now check your answers. First, with a list of typical exports to China in the early 1800s and the list of items Chasseur actually brought from China (as printed in a Baltimore newspaper in 1816). Then look at a list of imports and exports from Baltimore in 1997. Has there has been any change in the types of goods that are being imported and exported between Maryland and China from 1816 to 1997? Explain your answer in a complete sentence or two.
