Lesson #2 - Explorers!

Introduction

Did you ever set out by yourself, or maybe with a friend, and go some place you'd never been before? Maybe you took your bike or took a long walk to a place you had heard about but had never been to. Was it a little scary, not knowing exactly what lay ahead, or where you were going? But it was probably exciting, too, to be off by yourself - exploring, discovering. If you would have written down what happened along the way to share with others who didn't go, your adventure could be called an "expedition."

On your adventure, you felt exactly the way some of the world's greatest explorers felt when they set off on expeditions to places they'd never been before. We know about their journeys and voyages because they wrote about them in logbooks. We can share their sense of excitement and discovery through their logs.

In this lesson, you will try on the idea of Exploration! You'll investigate some of the reasons why men and women through all of history have set out on dangerous voyages into the unknown. You'll read about their expeditions in their own words - in their logs. Finally, you can decide to be part of great voyage of exploration yourself. You can sign on as a virtual stowaway aboard Pride of Baltimore II as she sails to Asia. By working through these Learning Adventures, and by reading the Teacher Aboard and Captain's logs, you can be part of an adventure of a lifetime.

You will need paper and pencil for this lesson. You may work together, but you need to keep your own notes.
