Watch It!
|
Introduction"Are you ready to jibe?""Make it fast!" Do you understand these statements sent back by Miss Leslie Bridgett, the teacher on board Pride II? If you have been reading Miss Leslie's logs you will know that "to jibe" means to adjust the sails and that "making it fast" means to tie the line that pulls the sail. Miss Leslie's logs are full of great stories (like the fishing lure contest - January 21 log) and tons of great inside information about life aboard Pride (like spotting bioluminescence plankton - January 18 log). In this lesson you will follow Miss Leslie and the crew through one of the three daily "watches". You will get to know the crew and get the real "scoop" on their jobs and lives while they all travel to Asia. You will find out what it's like to sleep through a storm on a creaking boat, what the crew eats, what they all do for fun, and what they do every day to get the Pride from Maryland to Asia.
Take a look above at the deck of Pride II from a "bird's eye view". Imagine only being able to be outdoors in an area that in 100 feet long and 26 feet wide! To really see what this would feel like you might want to use a measuring tape and chalk to mark off a space this size on a blacktop area. You would need to print out this page to have a drawing to take outside with you for reference. Even out on deck the open space is quite limited, as you can see from the drawing above.
Pride II may look like a huge impressive sailing vessel sailing out over the seas, but once you climb down below deck you are in for quite a surprise. Inside, where the crew lives, eats, and does some of their work it is beautiful, but can feel somewhat cramped. Take a minute to study the sketch above of the below deck area. Can you locate the bunks (beds) where each person sleeps? Can you find the galley (kitchen) where the meals are prepared? Can you find all three "heads" (bathrooms)? Again, it might be easier to visualize this area if you can use a tape measure and chalk to mark of the entire area and its compartments on a blacktop area. You could even try on a bunk for size! Remember to print out this page and take the drawings outside with you for reference. Read what Miss Leslie Bridgett has to say about life aboard the Pride - below deck. Living Aboard - January 14 Log So, are you ready to join Miss Leslie? Put on your sailing duds, grab a pencil (yes, even sailors use pencils!!) and let's get our sea legs going!
