Part IV: What Is My Location?

So, now that we have learned all about how location can be found, and how it has evolved over time, let's figure out what our approximate location is.

The Census Bureau has a Web site on the World Wide Web that can help us find our approximate position. Actually, what it is going to give us is the precise location of our local Post Office. So, what you're going to need to know for this activity is the name of your town and the two-letter abbreviation for your state, or your 5-digit zip code.

ACTIVITY 5

Write the following on your worksheet:

  1. the name of your town and the two letter abbreviation for your state, or
  2. your 5-digit zip code

Now, let's go to the Census Bureau's "U.S. Gazetteer" to find the latitude and longitude of your post office. Use the information you have already written on your worksheet to fill in the boxes, and then hit SEARCH. Then follow the instructions on your worksheet.
