Navigation from Space
Once the Space Age was begun, the future of radio navigation was moved to space. The USA began launching satellites for navigation in late 1959. Lots of different satellites were launched into orbit throughout the 1960's. In 1973, the U.S. Department of Defense proposed a new Global Positioning System (called GPS) that would use a series of 24 satellites. The first GPS satellite was launched in 1978. It was a developmental model created to help set up the system. More developmental satellites were launched until 1989 when the first operational satellite was launched into orbit. The last of these twenty-four satellites was launched by June 1993. On July 17, 1995, GPS became fully operational. So now, we live in an age where precise locations are available at the touch of a button.
