The Renaissance Continues at

Broad Creek Memorial
Scout Reservation

Summary

The Broad Creek Renaissance campaign is a focused fund-raising effort of the Baltimore Area Council, separate from other fund-raising efforts of the Baltimore Area Council or the Boy Scouts of America.
Location in Maryland

Objectives

The primary objective is to finance specific renovations and improvements at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation. Some of the most probable projects are listed on the left. The budget for immediate projects is $1,500,000

The secondary objective of this campaign is to provide for continuous maintenance and improvement of this magnificent facility for the next decade or, possibly, in perpetuity. It is estimated that a fund of $1,500,000 would yield income sufficient to maintain and continuously improve the camp indefinitely.

Justification

Neither the primary nor secondary objectives of this campaign affect the operating budget for the summer camp and year-round camping programs. The fee structure for the various camping programs is designed so that the operation breaks even. However, in order to keep camping fees at levels that encourage participation, rather than limit it, the major facilities maintenance and capital improvements must be funded separately.

Description

Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation is the largest privately-owned piece of land in Harford County, Maryland. It covers approximately 2,000 acres, has a 38 acre lake, and hosts upwards of 15,000 campers per year. It serves the 30,000 Scouts and Scouters of the Baltimore Area Council, Scout units of other councils in this region, and non-Scout groups.

As Broad Creek passes its 50th birthday, many of its physical structures and systems are showing signs of strain. Some are simply old, worn out, and need replacement. For instance, the water distribution system had a life expectancy of about 50 years. The pumps have been maintained, but now we have to replace all of the underground piping, valves and controls.

Other capital requirements stem from changes in our society. The old-style latrines are simply no longer acceptable to a county, state and country in which health and safety regulations are vastly different now than they were in the '40s and '50s.

We have a magnificent property that has the potential of providing unique and memorable experiences for tens of thousands of Scouts for many decades. If the facilities on the reservation cannot support the program activities, the camp will not be used (by choice and by decree). Were that to occur, this magnificent property would be unused and, therefore, useless. Rendering such a property useless would be a disservice to the families of the Baltimore area.

The Broad Creek Renaissance capital campaign will assure that Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation continues to serve the youth of our community for decades -- maybe forever!

Why

Many individuals have camped at Broad Creek, or were on the staff there, or have children who are going there this summer. To each of you, Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation has a very personal meaning. You might wish to provide for the camp a gift that will keep it a valuable part of all of our lives for many years to come.

The business community also has a stake in the success of the Scout camping program. The purpose of Scouting is to develop character, fitness and citizenship. The camping program provides some unique enhancements to a Scout's experience. At camp, a Scout develops the ability to work with others toward a common goal, the habit of service to others, and an appreciation of our natural heritage.

Individuals with such a foundation will enhance the success of our businesses and the growth of our communities throughout their adult lives.

Many of us have personally benefited from a positive experience at Scout camp. Our gift will do a great service to the thousands of Scouts who camp at Broad Creek each year. The return on our investment will be measured by the laughter heard rolling over the hills of Harford County for years and years to come.
