C.O.P.E., Provisional & Specialty Camps

There are several ways in which an individual Scout can enjoy the Broad Creek experience separate from his unit summer camp experience. The links below go to the other sections of this page.

A Registration Form is available. There are two-pages in this Acrobat® document. Page one is the form used by an individual Scout to sign up for a provisional or specialty camp and any special programs. Page 2 is for the unit leader to sign up multiple Scouts for special programs in which they will participate during the unit's stay at Broad Creek. Call for availability; some Specialty Camps fill up quickly!

The links to the left take you to pages describing other aspects of Boy Scout Summer Camp at Broad Creek.

Horsemanship Merit Badge

Horsemanship Merit Badge will be offered each week of summer camp as a one-day course on Monday. Scouts must be at least 12 years old. Scouts registered for this program will be transported to Hunting Ground Farms by Broad Creek staff. The program runs from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM each Monday. If a Scout completes the entire program, he will earn the merit badge.

Hunting Ground Farms is a Maryland certified camp located about one mile from Broad Creek. The program will be run by counselors at Hunting Ground Farms. Scouts must complete a Hunting Ground Farms Release and Waiver form to participate (available from Camping Services and on the BCMSR Web site).

The cost of the program is $70 per Scout in addition to the summer camp fee. Program limited to 16 per week.

Each Scout will have to fill out the Hunting Ground Farm Release and Wiaver form.

Project Cope

Project COPE stands for "Challenging Outdoor Personal Encounter." It comprises group initiative games, low-course and high-course activities. Some of the activities involve a group challenge while others test individual skills and agility. Participants climb, swing, balance, jump, repel, and think of solutions to a variety of activities. Most do much more than they thought they could. The participants of the COPE course must be at least 13 years of age. Scouts should have attained the First Class rank.

Participants must attend all the sessions assigned to complete the program. The sessions run for three (3) hours each. A COPE fee of $10.00 per person will be charged for those registered.

SCUBA Certification Program

Scouts at least 14 years old and leaders are invited to participate in the SCUBA certification program. To take the SCUBA course, campers must have Swimming Merit Badge and be certified at camp as a swimmer. The parents or leaders must complete a special release on Sunday when the Scouts check in. In a weekÕs time, the participant will have the opportunity to earn SCUBA certification. The cost of the program is the Broad Creek camp fee plus $225. This provides the person with all equipment for the week at SCUBA camp. A camper only needs his swim gear and towel. Program limited to 16 per week.

See Advanced SCUBA, below in Specialty Camps, as well.

Provisional Camping

The provisional camping program of the Baltimore Area Council is designed to meet the needs of all boys regardless of age or experience. A Scout may elect to attend one or more of the programs offered.

Provisional camping is being offered at Camp Spencer during the first six weeks of the 2008 summer camp season, and in Saffran for the seventh week. Please check the dates and fees on this Web site or in the "BCMSR Dates & Rates" flier. The Scout should bring all his personal gear; the camp provides everything else. The provisional troops are limited to forty (40) Scouts per session. A Scout attending Broad Creek for a second week will receive a $25 reduction in the camp fee for the second week.

Specialty Camps

Come on up to Broad Creek for the
Specialty Camp of your choice!

The Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation offers five specialty camps during the summer camping season. Five different and distinct programs will be offered in Camp Spencer to challenge every Scout. These programs are listed in the "Provisional and Specialty" brochure in the Unit Program Kit or at the Council Service Center. Each program will be led by qualified staff members with the intention of helping a Scout specialize in specific fields of interest and to progress along the advancement trail.

And you can attend Broad Creek Summer Camp with your Troop, as well !

Important Information

All of the Specialty Provisional Camps have limited capacities. Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Reservations require the completed application along with the non-refundable deposit. Confirmations for any of the camps will be mailed out to the Scout after April 15th. Along with the confirmation will be a medical form, a suggested list of what to bring to camp and program materials related to the selected camp.

Some merit badge work must be completed before camp if Scouts are to earn a completion of that badge. Required pre-camp work will be sent out with the confirmation information.

Scouts attending Broad Creek for a second week will receive a $25 reduction in the camp fee for the second week. If you have any questions related to the specialty camps, please contact Camping Services at 443-573-2500. The Baltimore Area Council reserves the right to cancel any camp due to lack of registrations.

Use the Registration Form described above. Call for availability; some Specialty Camps fill up quickly!

Oest Family Camping

We offer a Family Camping program in Camp Oest. It will be similar to the Webelos/Cub Scout resident camping experience (ask the Camping Service for the related brochure). These sessions are being set up to allow any family member; mom, dad, brothers and sisters, or any other family member, to camp with a Cub Scout, Webelos, or any registered Scout.

Families will camp together in the 2-person walled tents. Meals will be provided by our staff in the dining pavilion. The program will allow a Cub Scout or Webelos to experience much that same program as the Cub/Webelos Resident Camp, but with more flexibility to allow all family members to participate. Younger family members are the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

If an older youth program is in order, the Camp Oest staff will be ready to serve. Boys will be able to earn any of the awards that other Scouts work on.

There is one session scheduled, July 30 - Aug. 2, 2008. All rules and procedures of the Cub Camp apply. Everyone must have the proper physical, and fees paid prior to coming to camp. The fees are the same as for the Cub Camp and all activities will be open. Space is limited so make your plans early. If you have questions, call Camping Service (443-573-2500) or your district camping chairman. Use the Cub Summer Camp Group Form to register.
