Boy Scout Summer Camp

SCUBA Diving Each Week!

A SCUBA diving program will be available each week! Scouts spend from 9 to 3 each day at Guppy Gulch learning SCUBA diving. A Scout must be 14 years old in calendar 2008 to participate. More about this is the near future. Watch the Web site and the Area Scouter.

Horsemanship Merit Badge

Horsemanship Merit Badge will be offered each week of summer camp as a one-day course on Monday. Scouts must be at least 12 years old. Scouts registered for this program will be transported to Hunting Ground Farms by Broad Creek staff. The program runs from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM each Monday. If a Scout completes the entire program, he will earn the merit badge.

Hunting Ground Farms is a Maryland certified camp located about one mile from Broad Creek. The program will be run by counselors at Hunting Ground Farms. Scouts must complete a Hunting Ground Farms Release and Waiver form to participate (available from Camping Services and on the BCMSR Web site).

The cost of the program is $70 per Scout in addition to the summer camp fee. Program limited to 16 per week.

Each Scout will need to have filled out the Hunting Ground Farm Release and Wiaver form.

2008 Will Be a Great Year!

We encourage you to start planning your Broad Creek adventure today. All information and materials you will need are included in this Web site and in the Broad Creek information folder. Call Camping Services (443-573-2500) if you would like the printed information. We look forward to serving you and your Scouts at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation. See you there!

Camping at Broad Creek

At Broad Creek you will find a camping program that will meet the needs of every Boy Scout and Adult Scouter. A wide variety of camping opportunities are offered. In our Scout Camps, Saffran and Spencer, we offer a first year camper program and a more challenging program for the experienced Scout. These include canoeing on the Susquehanna River, Mountain biking, Kayaking, and the C.O.P.E. program. Camp Oest offers Family Camping in addition to its Cub Scout Program.

Camp Saffran

Your unit will camp around one of eight (8) lodge sites or one of four (4) adirondack sites. Each site is equipped with electricity, refrigeration and a gas stove. Cooking equipment is provided and extra equipment may be obtained from the Quartermaster. Each Unit has a choice of one of four methods of food preparation.

  • Choice 1 Central Dining: Completely prepared quality meals, by our experienced cooking staff, will be awaiting you at our pavilion. If you are planning to do Central Dining, you must specify this when you sign-up for camp. Meal Times are: Breakfast 8:00 a.m., Lunch 12:15 p.m., Dinner 6:00 p.m.
  • Choice 2 Patrol Cooking: Food will be issued once a day to the unit that chooses this method. Provisions will be obtained from the Stock Control Building according to the number of members in each patrol. Patrol cooking sites will be set up in camp. If you are planning to do patrol cooking, you must specify this when you sign-up for camp.
  • Choice 3 Troop Issue: Food will be issued to the troop in bulk form. Provisions will be obtained from the Stock Control Building according to the number of people at the campsite. The unit will follow the menu provided by the camp. If you are planning to do troop issue, you must specify this when you sign-up for camp.
  • Choice 4 Troop Cooking: Units provide all of their own food, either by bringing it from home or using one of the stores conveniently located in the area.

Camp Spencer

Camp Spencer offers Central Dining meal service. Scouts also enjoy the shot gun program. Trap shooting is always a challenge for both Scouts and their leaders.

Central Dining: Meals are served in the Jacobs Dining Facility. Meal service is cafeteria style. Waiters from each unit will set tables, assist with food service, and help clean up. Quality meals are prepared by our experienced cooks. Seconds on food items are usually available for hungry campers. After each meal, your unit will participate in the fellowship and crazy antics of the Spencer Staff!

Order of the Arrow

For over seventy-five years the Order of the Arrow has been the Boy Scouts of America's "Brotherhood of Cheerful Service." It is an organization of honor campers whose four-fold purpose is:

  • To recognize those Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.
  • To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
  • To promote Scout camping as directed by the Council Camping Committee.
  • To crystallize the Scout habit of cheerfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

Order of the Arrow members are selected by their fellow Scouts during a unit election conducted by an O.A. representative from their chapter or lodge. Unit elections are usually conducted in the spring, but they may also take place at summer camp provided at least 50% of the active troop members are present. Elected candidates will be recognized at a Call-Out ceremony on Friday evening following the closing campfire. Family and friends are invited to attend.

In addition to holding unit elections and Call-Outs, Nentico Lodge offers many other opportunities to Arrowmen. At summer camp, an Ice Cream Social will be held for all Arrowmen. An opportunity will also be provided for members to seal their membership in the Order by becoming Brotherhood members.

For Out-of-Council troops, it is recognized that there is much value in having a Call-Out at summer camp. If this is desired, a letter of authorization must be issued by the home Lodge Chief. The unit election must be conducted before summer camp by the home lodge. The letter of authorization and the Scoutmaster's copy of the Troop's elections report must be presented to the Order of the Arrow representative at the summer camp. Call-Outs will not be conducted unless all paperwork is in order. Following the Call-Out, the candidates will receive invitations from their home lodge to participate in their Lodge's Ordeal.

Nentico Lodge 12 is the Order of the Arrow Lodge of the Baltimore Area Council. Feel free to visit the Nentico Web Site.
